Welcome Back!  Handouts: Syllabus/Class rules, Citizenship.  Briefly discuss the focus of the semester.  Write a letter to yourself on what you envision accomplishing by the last day of senior year.  Get student passwords and ID # so students can check grades that I post regularly. Read syllabus and classroom rules to be discussed tomorrow. **Buy a one subject notebook with a folder by Friday

Thur. 9/4

Handout:  College Entrance Essay assignment, Tips on writing a college essay, MLA format.  Go over assignment.  Students will read several sample college essays that other students have written   **Buy a one subject notebook with a folder by Friday

Fri. 9/5

Explain metaphors and read two Marquette student’s entrance essays.  Work on your college essay in your notebook.  Show me at least two paragraphs of your rough draft (typed in MLA format) on Mon. Or Tues. next week if you want suggestions. MEET IN THE COMPUTER LAB (259B) TO RESEARCH COLLEGES ON MON.

Mon. 9/8

Show me your rough draft of your college essay.  Research colleges or trade schools you may want to apply to this month. A complete college essay typed in MLA format is due on Wed. (3 pts.)

Tues. 9/9

  COMPUTER LAB 259B—Finish researching schools and print at least one college application to fill out.  Complete college application to be checked on Friday, Sept. 19 (5 pts.)

Wed. 9/10

Handout: FVP requirements.  Go over handout. Work on editing the rough draft to clean up common errors in writing and expression. Take essay home tonight, make corrections, and turn in a polished typed copy tomorrow WITH NO NAME ON IT.

Thur. 9/11

Collect college essays with no names (5 pts) Prisoner Organ Donor FVP presentation given by Mrs. Angeli.  Handout:  Sample FVP essay.  Sign up for FVP presentations that begin on 9/18.  Bring WRITE FOR COLLEGE (WFC) to class tomorrow.

Fri. 9/12

Read and peer edit other student’s college essays (everyone reads four and makes corrections and gives feedback for improvement). Hand back essays to be corrected and polished by next Friday.  YOU MUST turn in the corrected rough draft with your final copy.  Handout: WFC Scavenger Hunt using your WFC find the sections and details to fill out handout due Monday 5 pts.

Mon. 9/15

Collect Scavenger Hunt and briefly discuss how the book will be used (5 pts.)  Take PUNCTUATION PRETEST. Discuss the importance of good writing skills for college.

Tues. 9/16

Mrs. A. Does another sample FVP Presentation Handouts: sample introduction of an FVP essay off today’s topic AND the Grading rubric for the FVP Presentations (30 pts.) . Go over senior writing project prompt. REMEMBER: College Application is due completed on Friday (5 pts.) along with the final College Essay and corrected rough draft (20 pts.)

Go over FVP essays.  Handout:  Reminders of How to Write an FVP. Students will correct their FVP and peer edit.  Begin our Grammar/Punctuation Unit.  Go over ELLIPSIS< DASH>HYPHEN.  Due Wed.:  Write a 1 ½ page min. narrative in your notebook about a time you got in trouble (make it school appropriate) using at least one ELLIPSIS< DASH>HYPHEN .  Underline each example and state the term in the left column. You have tomorrow in class to write it (I have a sub).

Tues. 9/23

Turn in corrected FVP essay #! (5 pts.) Go over capitalization rules and put in notebook.  Handout: Capitalization exercises.  Go over answers.  Work on trouble story entry that is due tomorrow.

Wed. 9/24

Check punct. and read aloud some of the trouble stories (3 pts.) Read “Eleven” Talk about “exploding the moment”—students rewrite one paragraph from trouble story exploding the moment using at least one punct. skills and underline –due Thursday.

Thur. 9/25

Check paragraph (2 pts.) Teach dialogue and record in notebook.  Have students write a recent phone conversation with correct dialogue paragraphing and punctuation.

Collect FVP essay (5 pts.) Practice a dialogue with correct punctuationGo over CLAUSE, PHRASE, INTRO. CLAUSE/ PHRASE, and APPOSITIVES. Write down examples in notebook a long with rules to remember.

Review Monday’s punct. terms with examples.  Handouts: Appositives, Intro. Phrase and clause.  Complete handouts for tomorrow.

Wed. 10/1

I have a sub—gone to a conference--Go over punctuation handouts. Write a story about any story you can tell and remember from being in  a car—trip, driver ed., sad-funny, etc. You must include: One –appositive, intro. clause, intro. phrase, a direction capitalized and not, and a relative capitalized and not. This is SEVEN terms underlined and labeled in the left column in your 1 ½ page min. entry in your notebook. You must also include dialogue of at least 6 interchanges of conversation in a row. DUE FRIDAY (5 pts.)

I have a sub—gone to a conference-- Working with a partner, write a conversation that the two of you have on a “school appropriate” conversation.  I t was be at least 10 lines of conversation mixed with telling a story.  1 ½ pages min.  Turn into sub at the end of the hour.
